Telegraph is reporting today that the Burberry model, Tom Nicon committed suicide after falling 40 feet from his apartment window in Italy. He was reportedly depressed over his breakup with his girlfriend. I wonder if the isolation of modeling is leading to the rising incidents of models and designers turning to drastic measures like suicide to fix their emotional issues? Unfortunately the faces of sadness are masked with a smile…
One of the last people to see Tom was Donatella Versace and she said: “Tom was with us on Friday morning for a final show fitting. He seemed fine and calm. He had already done three or four shows with us and he was a sweet boy. I just can’t understand why he did what he did. We would never have thought he would do something like this.
“When we heard the news we were all so upset and we still are all so very sad.”
The gorgeous French model, Tom Nicon was found dead in Milan today. This is only one day before Milan fashion week is set to begin. He reportedly went to his Versace fitting this morning and returned to his apartment and then was suppose to meet with his agent. He never showed up. He allegedly fell from his window but there is some speculation that it may have been a suicide. Tom had James Dean good looks with smoldering eyes and a bit of a rebel attitude. Nicon had appeared in shows for Versace, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, and Burberry among others. Is there something going on in the fashion world as Nicon’s death is the 8th one latest in a string of top model deaths over the past couple of years, following Daul Kim and Ambrose Olsen’s.
Working in the movie industry for so long, I can understand the loneliness, heartbreak and self esteem issues that actors face so I can only imagine that it must be a million times worse for a model. They are booked on looks and looks alone. The superficiality of it must weigh heavily on a persons self worth. An anonymous model told Isaac Likes, “People think we are young and beautiful and rich and happy. But we’re not. We go to castings and the directors take one look at us and then we’re dismissed. You spend your whole life wondering what’s wrong with you. Why didn’t I get that job? You’re competing with your friends, you’re away from your family. The pressure is huge. It’s not the fairytale life people would expect.”
There may be some sort of tribute to the fallen model but no news of specifics yet. I will keep you posted. Our hearts and prayers go out to his friends and family in this tragic time. Please post your condolences below…
